How To Install WAMPServer In Windows

What is a WampServer? WampServer is a windows web development software, which allows you to create web application that use Apache, PHP, MySQL database and also comes with database management tools such as PHPMyAdmin and SQLite Manager to easily manage databases.

Though there are many alternatives to Wamp Server for windows which I will list in my upcoming post, the best alternative is XAMPP which I believe is better than WampServer but a bit complicated.

This article will walk you through the steps to install Wamp server in Windows.

Installing WampServer in Windows

Here is a simple step by step guide to Install Wamp Server in windows, however the process of installation remain the same across Windows platform. The first step is to download the latest version of WampServer.

Downloading Latest WampServer

At the time of writing this article we are at version 2.5, available to for 32-bit and 64-bit, download the correct installer file for your version of Windows. Before running the WampServer installer you are required to install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 pack.  To download Visual Studio 2012 VC 11 vcredist_x64/86.exe : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679.

Step 1 : If you have already installed Visual Studio 2012, double-click the wamp server installer file.  Next you will see the Welcome To The WampServer Setup Wizard screen. Click Next to continue the installation.

Step 2 : The next screen you are presented with is the License Agreement. Read the agreement, check the radio button next to I accept the agreement, then click Next to continue the installation.

Step 3 : Next you will see the Select Destination Location screen. Unless you would like to install WampServer on another drive, you should not need to change anything. In my case I always keep a dedicate drive for my web projects. Click Next to continue.

Step 4 : The next screen you are presented with is the Select Additional Tasks screen. You will be able to select whether you would like a Quick Launch icon added to the taskbar or a Desktop icon created once installation is complete. Make your selections, then click Next to continue.

Step 5 :  Next you will see the Ready To Install screen. You can review your setup choices, and change any of them by clicking Back to the appropriate screen, if you choose to. Once you have reviewed your choices, click Install to continue.

Step 6 :  This will start your installation process of WampServer to the location you have selected in step 3.

Step 8 :  Once of the extraction process completes you will be prompted to select the default browser, the favorite browse I use for development is FireFox, you select your browse that you are comfortable using it, then click Open to continue.

You will prompted with Windows Security Alert window will open, saying that Windows Firewall has blocked some features of the program. Check whether you want to allow Apache HTTP Server to communicate on a private or public network, then click Allow Access to allow installation process.

Step 9 : Next, the PHP Mail Parameters screen will appear. Leave the SMTP server aslocalhost, and change the email address to one of your choosing. Click Next to continue.

Step 10 : The Installation Complete screen will now appear. Check the Launch WampServer Now box, then click Finish to complete the installation.

Now to check wampserver correctly installed on your Windows PC, the Wamp Server icon will turn from RED to Orange to Green.  If the Icon stays Red or Orange, then you have not followed the procedure as I have listed. This will also happens when you do not install the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 pack.

To test the your newly installed WampServer open your default browser and http://localhost/ you should see the WampServer homepage displayed.
