Social media is becoming an increasingly popular tool for promoting photography businesses. However, many photographers spend hours trying to market their business through social media with little success. What could be the problem?
The following are some of the main mistakes photographers make when using social media.
1. Not having a goal
It is very important that you have a goal before embarking on your promotional campaign. When you surpass of hit that goal, your campaign will be a success. However, if you don’t have goals, you will never know if you have succeeded or not. In addition, without goals, you won’t be able to evaluate how effective social media is compared to other forms of marketing. So what is your objective? Do you want to attract more inquiries? Or increase traffic to your site? If possible, quantify your goal and check your progress frequently.
2. Talking too much
When you use social media, don’t just talk about yourself or your photographs. In the midst of your marketing campaign, make sure you interact frequently with other people. Most of your posts should be something that is useful to others. Answer people’s questions, share valuable links, promote others and engage in conversation. What are people in your community talking about? Find a way of participating in conversations while promoting your business. Learn how to use Facebook and Twitter features to connect with new people in your niche. Once people get to know and trust you, it will be easier to promote your business to them. Remember to say thank you when people take time to share your posts or compliment you.
3. Doing nothing
Some photographers have websites which don’t have tools for engaging their visitors in social networks. You need to add ‘tweet this’ or ‘share this’ buttons so as to encourage your visitors to share your posts in their communities and thus build a following for you. In addition, offer your visitors a newsletter signup option. This will help you sustain your relationship with them and make follow up easier in the future.
4. Being impersonal
You need to show people that there is a real person, not a robot, behind all the posts and tweets. Therefore, let out your passion and personality. Post photos of yourself and share personal experiences frequently. Visit other people’s blogs and share your opinion, ‘retweet’ their posts or contribute a comment. Based on your comments, people are likely to develop an interest and visit your blog to explore your photography. This tactic has proven effective in popularizing my blog which promotes thinkstock coupons and istock photo discounts.
5. Not making use of tracking tools
You need have a way of measuring the results of your campaign so as to set objective decisions. One of the best tools for interpreting data is Google Analytics. This tool can help you compare the behavior patterns of visitors from LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter. Google Analytics can also be useful in comparing the traffic coming in from posts shared, thus enabling you to know what kind of posts are most effective.
