Social media has changed the manner in which many big businesses operate. As a self employed individual, social media can have a profound impact on your own business operations as well.
While many who are self employed are a little wary of the idea of adding “another thing” to their daily grind – after all, being self employed, they wear all the hats in the business – the positive results of properly incorporating social media activities into your standard business practices can be well worth the time and effort.
Strategically Choosing Your Battles
If you’re leery of getting too deeply involved in social media, you’re not alone. Spreading yourself too thin as a self employed individual can be the death of your business. You can run yourself ragged trying to keep up with everything and the same is true of getting yourself in too deep in social media too. You’ll need to choose your battles strategically and focus your efforts tightly in order to see rewards from your efforts and not lose sight of your other business activities in the process.
Social Media Options for Self Employed People
The world of social media is wide open for every business out there, including yours. While there are tons of different sites and utilities to choose from, there are a few that are easier than others to put to work for yourself if you’re self employed. These include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. That being said, Google+ has a promising future as well, and you may decide that it’s a venue that makes good sense for your business.
No matter which social media outlet you choose, be sure to utilize the site for all its worth. Doing so will give you a better return on your time investment. Here are just a couple of the social utilities that you can put to work for yourself as a self employed person.
One of the biggest benefits of using Facebook to establish your social media presence as a self employed person is the popularity of the social utility. Odds are that many of your family members, friends and business partners already have accounts with Facebook. You may even have a personal page on Facebook already too. All of these things makes building a business page on the site easier to accomplish and will make building a base “fan” following on the site simpler as well.
Facebook also offers the chance to get free advertising for new products or services you offer. You can promote your business activities through status updates or by scheduling official “events” to which you invite customers and clients. You can also purchase advertising on Facebook, if you have the budget to do so, and can establish your own expense range for any formal ads that do appear on the site.
Many self employed individuals do wonders with Twitter, but the site requires a pretty big commitment in order to keep your account active, especially since reaching your customers or clients in the “real time” environment on this social utility means you need to be online and tweeting at the time when the most users are on the site. That’s typically the middle of the work day for you and you may not have the ability to accomplish this.
It is possible though to keep your account active by sharing engaging information that you find elsewhere, so if your business activities involve a lot of research, you may want to post some links to those intriguing resources via your own tweets.

I have read so many articles or reviews on the topic of the blogger lovers but this article is truly a pleasant paragraph, keep it up.
Twitter can definitely be time consuming. Sometimes small businesses are well served by hiring a social media manager to handle tweeting and making sure important tweets get to the business owner for prompt replies. The social media manager can be freelance, but must closely work with the owner when important business comes up via Twitter. I am working on offering this service through my social media website. I cringe when I see small businesses that tweet in a self-destructive way. Nothing hurts business more in social media realm than doing social media wrong.
