The WordPress blogging platform is so well-loved because it is an open source platform that lets bloggers have great degrees of personalization and customization. One of the best examples of this is WordPress templates. If you are new to blogging or thinking about taking your blog to the next level, you probably want to know a bit more about these templates and how you can use them.
What are WordPress Templates?
To get technical, WordPress templates are actually referred to as WordPress Themes. Themes let bloggers quickly customize many aspects of their site instead of going in and manually changing elements to alter how the blog appears, a task that can be difficult and time consuming.
There are many features that these themes will change. Themes usually give the blog a consistent overall look and feel with a certain style. This means that a theme will give a blog a particular color scheme, group of fonts, layout and more.
Are Themes Necessary?
If you know how to code, then the answer is no. You could manually enter in all the settings and details for your blog to get it how to look how you want. This is a difficult skill that people spend years in school for or learn through a lot of experience and other study, so for the vast majority of people, even those who are very computer savvy, the answer is yes.
Even if you want to be hands on and do it yourself, working from scratch sans theme is a lot of work, and makes using a platform like WordPress kind of pointless. You can select a theme that is close to what you want, and then you can change things around from there.
Where Do You Get Themes?
You can get themes through WordPress or from other sites around the internet. Like almost everything else, some themes are free, some are paid, some are better for businesses and some aren’t terribly good quality and are not recommended.
Before you select a theme, shop around a bit, and read reviews. WordPress allows users to leave reviews of all themes and plugins; always be sure to check these out before you download. If a theme doesn’t work and will somehow break down your blog, that’s something that is good to know before you install it.
Can I get a Custom Theme?
Of course! There are plenty of computer professionals who specialize in making WordPress themes. This will probably be costly, so if you are not a professional blogger, this may not be a worthwhile expense.
If you are going to get a custom theme created for your blog, select someone in the same way you would a new dentist or plumber. Check out any reviews on line and ask for referrals. You can also ask for recommendation from blogs that have an obvious custom design; find out who they went with and go from there.
What is a Good Theme for Me?
There are many ways to select the best theme for you and your blog. If you are getting started, the best theme is one that is free, from WordPress and well-reviewed. It is also a theme that has a style and aesthetic that you enjoy while still fitting your blog and its message.
Think of your theme almost like your blog’s avatar or profile picture. Even if you manage to snag an official logo for your blog, the template is really the face that the whole world is going to see. Make sure that your theme reflects whatever you want visitors to see and think about when they come to your page.
What are the Best WordPress Themes?
As you select your template, know that there really is no one best theme, and as there are so many out there, there aren’t even a handful of best themes. The best theme is one that you like, that looks fitting for your blog, that other users like, that has features you want and is within your price range. If you are looking for the best WordPress theme, know that the best theme is the one that is the best for you.
